PPL theory exam in Austria

Updated: Sources checked on 3 November 2026

In short

In Austria, Austro Control conducts the exam. The PPL theory covers all nine subjects on one day and cannot be split. Since 1 October 2026, registration for exams in Vienna runs only through the online portal, and only the calculator provided there is allowed.

One day, nine subjects

The PPL theory exam with Austro Control covers all nine exam papers on one day. According to Austro Control, splitting the subjects across several dates is not possible for organisational reasons. Plan your preparation so that all subjects are ready at the same time.

Registration via the online portal

Since 1 October 2026, registration for exams from 1 November 2026 is only possible through the Austro Control online portal. For now, the change applies to exams in Vienna. Your flight school registers once for this. You pay the exam fee online; for the PPL and LAPL, Austro Control states 18 euros per exam paper including VAT.

The calculator in Vienna

Since 1 October 2026, candidates may no longer bring their own calculators to theory exams in Vienna. Austro Control provides a standard calculator in the exam room, the Texas Instruments TI-34 MultiView. If you sit the exam at an external centre, check the rules there.

Pass mark, retakes, deadlines

  • A subject is passed at 75 per cent of the possible marks. Austro Control stresses that 74.9 per cent counts as a fail.
  • You can retake a failed subject on the next working day at the earliest, if seats are available.
  • You must pass all parts within 18 months, otherwise the exam starts again as a first attempt.
  • The passed theory is accepted for 24 months from the date of passing for the issue of a PPL(A).

Language

For the PPL you choose between German and English.

Which question catalogue?

Austro Control states that a national question catalogue is used for the PPL. At the same time, Aircademy lists Austria among the authorities that use the ECQB-PPL. The sources do not explain how the two relate. Ask your flight school or Austro Control if this matters for your preparation.
