Updated: Sources checked on 3 November 2026
In short
According to the information sheet of the North German aviation authorities (as of 05/2021), the exam has 132 multiple-choice questions in 284 minutes, taken on a computer in German or English. There, the questions come from Aircademy's ECQB-PPL. Other state authorities may set details differently.
Admission and authority
You need a recommendation from your training organisation. It requires that you have completed the theory training and is valid for 12 months. You take all exams for a licence with the same authority. Your flight school will tell you which aviation authority is responsible for you.

Question catalogue
According to the information sheet, the question catalogue comes from the ECQB-PPL and is obtained from Aircademy. Aircademy publishes part of the questions as sample catalogues, which the sheet describes as a representative extract suitable for preparation alongside your school’s lessons. You will find the sample catalogues on Aircademy’s site, not here.
On the day
- The exam runs on a computer with the software LPLUS TestStudio Pilots Examination Office (LTS PEXO). The authority links a demo exam in its information sheet.
- Each question has exactly one correct answer. A subject is passed at 75.00 per cent; wrong answers cost no marks.
- You get your results right after the exam.
- Exam questions are confidential. Anyone writing questions down is excluded from the rest of the exam that day.
- A proven attempt to cheat fails all subjects taken that day and bars you from further exams for at least 12 months.
Aids and language
Permitted are a calculator (non-programmable, without alphanumeric or aviation functions), a mechanical navigation computer, a protractor, compasses, a ruler and writing material. Bring a pen, a pencil and an eraser; the authority provides paper. You take the exam in German or English; a pure translation dictionary is allowed.
Deadlines
You must pass all subjects within 18 months, counted from the end of the calendar month of your first exam. After four failed attempts in a subject, or once the period has run out, you retake all subjects after further training. The passed exam is accepted for 24 months for the issue of the licence.
